Ron Berger


Mr. Berger earned his BA in Mathematics (minor in Chemistry) in 1971 from St. Mary’s University, San Antonio, Texas. His work has been centered around human labs first and, subsequently, simian labs. Mr. Berger was involved in establishing the original VRL in the early 90’s, and he continued working for Esoterix, Inc. for five years after VRL was purchased by his group. Finally, in 2004, the simian laboratory was acquired by Mr. Berger, whose extensive knowledge of IT and LIS systems, along with his drive to provide an excellent customer service, has helped the company achieve the recognition as one of the best in the industry. Changjun Shi, Ph.D

Senior Director of VRL China

Dr. Shi, received his M.D. from Suzhou University, College of Medicine, Suzhou China in1984. He received his PhD from University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa in 1995. Dr. Shi was instrumental in the establishing of the VRL China lab. EMAIL:

Chih-Ling Zao, PhD


Dr. Zao, obtained her PhD in Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry in 2007 from Georgia State University under her advisor, Julia K Hillard, PhD. Her dissertation was “B Virus Circumvents Innate Response in Human Cells”. Dr. Zao, received her Master of Science in Microbiology and Immunology from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan. Her Thesis was “Epidemiology Analysis of G2 Rotavirus Outbreak in Taiwan”. Dr. Zao is now the Chief Scientific Officer of VRL USA and is responsible for direction of all research and quality control. Arlene Leon, PhD

Lab Director

Dr. Leon obtained her MS in Science from Florida International University in Miami, Florida. After finishing her MS degree, Dr. Leon worked in the field of immunology, animal colony management, and transgenic animals. She then obtained her PhD in Genetics and Development from University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Leon has worked as the Principal Scientist/Scientific Director in the Animal Health Services Department at BioReliance, formerly Microbiological Associates. At BioReliance she introduced the use of new technologies like Microarray Multiplex serology testing and genotyping among others. She also served as Study director and contributing scientist for GLP studies. Dr. Leon is now the Lab Director of VRL-Maryland and is responsible for lab operations, quality control and product manufacturing. EMAIL:
