VRL Now Offering Interferon-γ Release Assay (IGRA)

IGRA is the preferred method of early detection of M. tuberculosis. The TB blood test (IGRA) measures T cell-mediated immune response (the release of Interferon gamma, IFN-γ) by mixing Mycobacterium antigens with whole blood in vitro.
Detect it early. During the early M. tuberculosis infection stage, cellular immune responses play more dominate roles than humoral response when bacterial loads are low. IGRA is an in vitro blood test using memory T-cells released IFN- γ as a marker of M. tuberculosis infection.
What advantages can you expect from the VRL IGRA Test?
Increased Accuracy
Compared to TST testing, our interferon-gamma test offers high sensitivity and high specificity. This means fewer false negatives and positives for your critical research.
Reduced Cost
We offer customized solutions for your Animal Health programs. Always with the goal of decreasing cost and maximizing the program’s strength.
Quick Turn Around Times
With IGRA Testing, results can be delivered in as few as 4 days.

VRL offers a cell-based in vitro assay in two formats for the detection of anti-AAV neutralizing antibodies:

  1. The screening assay (qualitative neutralization assay): the result is reported as positive or negative for the 3 dilutions (1:10, 1:20, 1:40) of each serum sample.
  2. The neutralizing antibody titer (or 50% inhibitory dose [ID50]) assay: (quantitative neutralization assay): each serum sample is 2-fold serial diluted from 1:10-1:5120, the result is reported as a titer value at which 50% inhibition of virus transduction is calculated.

Kalter/Heberling Annual Diagnostic Research Grant Winners

VRL Laboratories is proud to announce the first recipients of the Kalter/Heberling Annual Diagnostic Research Grants for 2020, following the committee’s careful review of essays submitted by researchers employed in academic facilities.

“The level of participation, and quality content that was submitted was very refreshing. In fact, our committee voted to award two recipients in this, our first year of the Kalter/Heberling grant program. The objective of this grant program is to help improve people’s lives backed by our commitment to providing standard-setting diagnostic testing services,” stated VRL President Dennis Pitts.

On August 3rd, 2020, VRL announced two award-winning institutions; Wake Forest School of Medicine for their submission Screening African Green Monkeys for SARS-CoV-2, and Florida Atlantic University for their essay Identifying Naturally Occurring Diseases in the Mexican Tetra (Astvanax Mexicanus). Each program was awarded a $10,000 grant for VRL testing services to advance the development of these research efforts.

“We are proud to award these fine institutions for their research submissions, and we thank all those who participated. The continued advances in research and development that this program will provide in the coming years reminds us of the passion VRL’s founders, Dr. Seymour Kalter and Dr. Richard Heberling best exemplified,” Pitts said.
VRL, for more than 30 years, has been in business as a diagnostic laboratory maintaining a focus on providing standard-setting diagnostic health monitoring and testing services that evolve with the needs of their customers. From testing to delivering timely customized reports, VRL is committed to being the premier provider for diagnostic testing.

Test Code Infectious Agent Specimen Required Comments
8597 2019-nCoV (SARS-CoV-2) -RT-PCR Respiratory specimens (including: nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal aspirates or washes, nasopharyngeal or oropharyngeal swabs, nasal mid-turbinate swabs, anterior nares swabs, broncheoalveolar lavage, tracheal and lower respiratory tract aspirates), fecal swabs in Cary-Blair transport medium, stool in sterile screw-top containers, fresh or frozen tissues, environmental swabs. For swab specimens, place swabs in viral transport media, universal transport media, liquid Amies media, 1-3 ml of molecular grade phosphate buffered saline (PBS) or normal saline. Swab specimens should be collected only on swabs with a   synthetic tip (such as polyester or Dacron®) with aluminum or plastic shafts. Swabs with calcium alginate or cotton tips with wooden shafts are not acceptable. Ship overnight with cold packs. The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a highly contagious viral infection caused by 2019-Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). It was emerging in Wuhuan City, Hubei Province, China in December 2019 and then becomes a pandemic in humans. Non-human primates are also vulnerable to be infected with 2019-nCoV.  Experimentally infected rhesus macaques with 2019-nCoV had been shown to develop mild pneumonia although no fever was observed, similar to mild forms of COVID-19 in humans. This assay detects 2019-nCoV viral RNA from samples.
